Five Lies Remus Told
This one is for etrangere Remus was secretive. He collected secrets the way some people collected Wizard Cards, and as long as he didn’t pull them out to inspect them himself no one ever guessed they were there. Remus kept secrets as a matter of course, as a matter of conditioning, as a matter of survival, but he only told a few lies. One of the most important things about keeping a secret is to be almost completely truthful. Lying outright is an amateur mistake that will more often then not come back to bite you. Lies put your secrets at jeopardy.
5. Remus says, “I’m easy.”
James wants to raid the kitchens and Sirius is set on slipping laxatives in with the owl treats for a surprise at breakfast. Peter brings up the valid point that after Sirius’ plan they’ll want to do James’ as well so they might as well do both, and they all turn to look at Remus.
“I’m easy,” Remus says.
A quiet night in the dorms to ease his aching joints isn’t practical. The marauders have their own gravity and everything that isn’t bolted down is pulled in or pushed away. Remus doesn’t have bolts, and going along is easier, so he does.
4. “I’ve been looking for work, haven’t I?” Remus says calmly to Sirius not looking up from the newspaper.
“That’s not what I asked, Moony.”
When Remus lifts his eyes over the top of the paper, Sirius is staring at him with his arms crossed hotly.
“Christ,” he mutters to himself before adding a louder response to Sirius. “What do you want me to say?”
“The truth would be nice. Where were you today? “
Remus is silent for a long moment and feels the exact second come and pass when he could have offered an explanation. Remus doesn’t bother after that. Sirius already assumes he knows the answers now.
3. “Oh God, Severus! That’s vile.”
Snape shoots him one of his imperceptible looks, piercing eyes under furrowed brows.
“I wouldn‘t expect someone in your position to be so ungrateful.” Snape responds finally, after studying him for a moment.
“My apologies, Severus,” Remus answers with a small smile.
Remus isn’t quite sure why he lies about the taste of the Wolfsbane. At the last second he almost thought Severus would appreciate it more than gratitude; a chance to provide Remus a small displeasure with his increased comfort.
The taste really wasn’t that bad. In fact Remus thinks it may grow on him.
2. “I love you,” Remus whispers into the darkness, a murmur soft lie that floats off to Tonks’ ears where it festers and chokes them both.
1. “You shouldn’t lie to yourself. You are one of the few people who has the sense not to believe a word that comes out of your mouth,” Severus claims. His voice is so low that had Remus’ ears not been straining in the darkness he may not have heard it at all.
“You just don’t believe anyone can be happy,” Remus accuses turning his head away from the voice to stare at more blackness. The silence coats him almost as much as the darkness and for a moment he feels as though he may be crushed by the room.
“I don’t believe you are,” Severus corrects. And the room does crush him. The heat raging through his chest and across his face can be explained by the walls closing in. The wetness on his cheek is sweat, and the words Severus says are too far away to hear.
